Alfredo De la Maria Biography
The artist Alfredo De la Maria was born in mid-1940 in the Republic of Uruguay. He concurrently studied art and architecture at the Fine Arts School in Montevideo. At the age of 18, he illustrated the politics and sport events in the largest daily newspaper of Montevideo. In 1961 his first exhibition with equestrian paintings took place in Punta del Este City.
His studies of Polo are famous in Uruguay, but he was also renowned for maritime and aviation art paintings. In 1966 De la María left for Europe where he settled in Paris for the next three years. Thereafter he returned to Montevideo, but stayed only briefly.
Then he traveled to Argentina, to take a position withan important publishing company in the city of Buenos Aires, where he created illustrations for the covers of the many major magazines including Automundo, Parabrisas, El Tony and Dartagnan for more than ten years. During this time he became totally involved in automotive art, and in 1989 he made the first of his many exhibits at the Buenos Aires Classic Cars Club. What is apparent when looking at his artwork is the fact that these are the work of a very talented painter who in his use of oils combined with his impressionist paintbrush brings comparisons with legends of the automotive art such as F. Gordon Crosby and Gotschke.
